Frequently
Asked Questions

General

  • Regenerative farming, means farmers using holistic practices on land contributing to the regeneration of the whenua, becoming healthier over time.

Our meat is 100% pasture raised & grass-fed, and we follow regenerative principles to raise and take care of our animals . This means our livestock are treated with care & respect, playing an active role in the regeneration of our soil and surrounding ecosystems. We are proud to provide a quality product free of any GMOs, hormones, pesticides or granular feed.

  • Guided by our Farm Conductor Jules Matthews, our regenerative principles include:

    1. Lifting diversity above and below ground

    2. Maximising photosynthesis

    3. Optimising disturbance; man made or nature based - are you seeing these as a problem or opportunity?

    4. Letting nature lead

    5. Context is decisive; the context determines what you do and see - do you have resources or not? Wet or dry?

    6. Ensure year round cover; either a growing plant or mulch. Feed & protect your underground livestock.

    7. Address limiting factors (air , water, nutrient cycles, diversity, management & mindset).

  • Mangaroa Farms is a community food hub and resilience education centre located in Te Awa Kairangi, the Hutt Valley water catchment, Upper Hutt, Wellington. As a registered nonprofit company, Mangaroa Farms is proud to be part of Biome Trust.

The whenua has been operating as a regenerative farm for the last 4+ years, after spending the previous 10-15 years in transition from being from an ex-dairy farm.

  • Our animals eat mostly our luscious green pastures, informed by an intact soil system of microbes & organisms.

We supplement their feed with kelp, salt, and mineral mixes, to ensure we are producing a premium nutrient dense product.

  • We do not use any hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified animal feed. Nor do we endorse or support the use of GMO seeds in Aotearoa.

  • We vaccinate our sheep as we have issues with things like toxoplasmosis and clostridial diseases. Calves are vaccinated for clostridial diseases but our older beef cattle are not.

  • We will have this ready in a few weeks, once we have our distribution systems under control. Sign up to our newsletter to get updates on when produce delivery is live.

  • When our new season meat is processed, it is frozen immediately. Because of this, some of our labels suggest a best before date which is meant for a "fresh" product - however, since the meat is frozen immediately - you can safely add up to 1 year on to this best before date.

Don't worry - we wouldn't send you a dodgy product!

  • No, this is not recommended.

If there is still visibly ice on the meat, (and it still appears frozen) it should be safe to refreeze.

However, if the meat is noticeably thawed, we do not recommend re-freezing, instead to place in the fridge and consume within 5 days.

  • Because of the large range of variable prices across our products - e.g. premium beef mince; we have grouped the price ranges into Small, medium & large, and priced each range based on the highest dollar amount possible for that range.

E.g. 500-700g mince will be priced at 700g (highest rate).

However, when it comes time to pack your order, we will modify the amount charged to your credit card based on the actual weight of your order - which will never be more than what you paid, only equal, or less.
