Relocalising Food - April Newsletter
Autumn is here, and the first frost of the year has graced the gardens, pastures, and community households. During this seasonal shift, we're feeling the impact of extreme weather right on our doorstep - especially for our whānau in central Wellington, Stokes Valley and Lower Hutt who have been affected pretty heavily by the rain.
As major weather events ramp up in frequency, we're reminded of the value of local food security. We all need to eat, and especially in times of need, the more locally that nutritious kai is available, the better.
With that in mind, we’re really excited to integrate what we've been hearing from our wider community, helping to set up the right systems for a more accessible, more resilient bioregion.
We look forward to sharing our latest updates with you below - and unti next time, thanks for walking with us on the journey.
Ngā mihi aroha,
Your friends and farmers at Mangaroa Farms
Home-grown, Home-processed Meat
We're excited to announce the upcoming launch of our own Mangaroa Farms Butchery, providing many benefits, including sovereignty in food production, regular fresh meat at the farm shop, and nose-to-tail utilisation of our animals.
You can engage with our fresh meat offerings by:
Visiting the Farm Shop / Kete Kai to find regular, fresh beef & lamb on the shelves.
Order fresh Mangaroa meat online, delivering locally around the North Island here.
Order a full or half carcass - if you're a keen butcher or know someone who is, we'll be offering better value through providing full or half carcasses (sides) of beef and lamb. Express your interest here.
Learn about our regenerative grazing practices - we’ll open our spaces for community events focused on resilience, local solutions and practical collaboration.
Big thanks to the Coulston family, particularly Miki, Jake and Rob, for leading this project with such passion and commitment. We also honour the McLay family, who owned the butchery facility before it was in Mangaroa Farms' stewardship. We're proud to continue this legacy.
Live & Work at
Mangaroa Farms
For eight weeks, we're inviting a small group of people to live on the farm, work alongside our team for twenty hours a week, and help hold the place together - gardens, native planting, pest management, education, maintenance, & storytelling.
This is a volunteer stay, not a job. It comes with a free room, staple kai, and a chance to find a different rhythm on 3,000 acres at Mangaroa Farms.
Interested?
Apply - if you've got hardy hands, an open heart, and four to eight weeks free between 1 June and 31 July. The form below takes about five minutes.
Share it on - pass the link to anyone in your circle who fits the bill. Gardeners, growers, earth enthusiasts, builders, teachers, storytellers - we welcome all of them.
Get in touch with questions - reach the team at online@mangaroa.org if you want a feel for the fit before applying.
Applications close Sunday 11 May. Strong candidates are invited to a 30-minute Zoom kōrero.
