Lambing Season at Mangaroa Farms

Some shots from last week out in the field, where Lauren, Gav, and Chris were out in the paddocks checking on our new Mangaroa lambs for the 2024 spring season.

Every day, new little lamb beings are being born, gracing the whenua with fresh spring energy 🌱

Supporting these births and checking the lambs is a big job. Our dedicated livestock team (Gav, Lauren, and sometimes young Riley) will circle the farm 3 times a day rain or shine to ensure its all going smoothly. They’re there to help the new mums when they need a hand, especially when a birth gets tricky. Managing the different multiples – whether it's singles, twins, or triplets – is all part of the day.

The primary focus is looking after the health of these little ones. Keeping them warm, making sure they get that crucial colostrum milk to give them the energy and antibodies to protect them for the very first steps of life. Sometimes the mums need a hand with birthing as well - our CEO Chris had his debut as a lamb midwife!

Of all the lambs that are born, around 3/4 of them will eventually head to market, while the rest will stay on to become the future of our flock.

At Mangaroa, we’re always thinking long-term – our regenerative lamb farming focuses on the health of the land as much as the animals. It’s about building resilience for seasons to come, fostering biodiversity, and ensuring a future of abundance for both our whānau and the whenua.
