A Serene Escape in Nature

Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au

I am the river and the river is me.

Life in Mangaroa is defined by nature / Papatuanuku. The trees, birds, water, flowers, hillsides, mountains, glow-worms, sheep, deer, and most of all - the Mangaroa river, te awa o Mangaroa.

The people of Mangaroa are all caretakers for the river in different ways. Some care very literally by planting trees, but others care via abstractions (from childhood education to open source ai data justice). The thread that weaves us all is the care.

We invite you to join us on this journey.

Hear from those who’ve stayed with us

  • The highlight of my stay was the warm welcome that permeated my whole stay. The quality and depth of the people in attendance. Physically I appreciated the warmth and comfort in the winter conditions. There was such a rich and nourishing set of activities and the conversations were next level.

But, the “what” of village life is less relevant than the “who”... and it’s really the people (te tangata) that make this place so special.

Participation in “village life” is opt-in. We resist the insular thinking that defines many “intentional communities.”  There's overarching respect given to personal space, sovereignty, and boundaries. That said, a whole individual is always part of a bigger whole. We recognize the mutuality of living together in a rural context on Planet Earth.

It’s within that context that we are opening the invitation for a family to join our village.
