Similar to our green spring onions, we harvest these glossy purple ‘mini onion’ beauties as bunching (spring) onions that transform to a nice pastel pink when cooked or pickled. 

Their flavour is mild and sweet, lacking the pungency of a mature common red onion. This means they’re a versatile bunch where they can be roasted or charred, pickled or eaten raw.  

For instance when roasting purplette onions arrange them in a single layer on a roasting dish whole or cut in half, and brush them with a little olive oil and sprinkle some sea salt.  Place in a hot oven (200 degrees celsius) for 15-20 minutes and serve as a side dish.  

Onions in general are rich in healthy soluble fibre that feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut. They also have a decent amount of vitamins such as Vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium and folate.  Purple and red varieties are also rich in powerful antioxidants such as anthocyanins that help reduce stress and inflammation in the body which are only found in red, purple and blue fruits and vegetables.

Resilience & Regeneration

Our veges are grown locally on our farm with no harmful sprays/chemicals inside our greenhouse, or outside in one of our classic 25m long garden beds. Happy herds of sheep, cows, and chickens are grazed in the pastures nearby, working as part of a regenerative system that nourishes the underground soil microbes, and giving back to Papatūānuku.
